Full-frame sensor

SWPP Photographic Glossary

A full-frame sensor is a type of digital camera sensor that matches the size of a traditional 35mm film frame, measuring approximately 36mm x 24mm. This larger sensor size allows for improved image quality, greater detail, and better low-light performance compared to smaller sensors such as APS-C or Micro Four Thirds. Full-frame sensors are commonly found in professional-grade cameras, providing photographers with a wide dynamic range and enhanced control over depth of field for creative effects.

Full-frame cameras are often preferred for portrait, landscape, and commercial photography because they capture more of the scene and produce images with less noise at higher ISO settings. The larger sensor also allows lenses to achieve a shallower depth of field, creating smooth background blur (bokeh) that enhances subject separation. While full-frame cameras can be more expensive and bulkier than crop-sensor alternatives, their superior image quality and versatility make them a popular choice for serious photographers seeking professional results.
